Description
The ThermTec Oryx 650L is a scope that Hunt The Night have had a lot to do with developing, so already you know it’s got stuff in it that we like. We’re on record saying we don’t really like LRF units in the lens, and typically we don’t, we’d prefer them on the outside of lens so it doesn’t interfere with the amount of light getting into the sensor.
ThermTec have done the LRF in the lens a little bit differently by splitting the IR sender and receiver, resulting in a 23% reduction of the LRF size. Personally, we’d still prefer the LRF to be on the outside, but everyone is moving towards these sleek looking devices, and this is the best design for it so far.
The Oryx line introduces new controls, firstly the focus is on the top turret under the menu wheel and this is pretty cool, it brings it further back so no reaching forward and its good for both left and right handers.
ThermTec have also introduced a new Zoom control which sits just in front of the rear buttons and its a bit more like a traditional scope, again perfect for both left and right handers.
The Oryx runs off a 21700 battery, and like all ThermTec units the battery life is outstanding. ThermTec continue to impress with their battery management algorithms.
The Oryx finally brings ThermTec into line with a lot of the rest of the industry by moving to a 2560×2560 1.03″ OLED screen, and it’s a beautiful viewing experience.
Coupled this with all the other bells and whistles like Ballistic Range Finder, Recoil Activated Video, seamless WIFI streaming, TASS (return to base magnification when firing a shot), and you’ve got a very well thought out unit.
Why buy this over the Oryx 635L? Well if you’re shooting over 150 you’ll want the extra base magnification that the 50mm lens gives you. Also, if you’re in humid, foggy, dusty areas you’ll appreciate how much of an improvement the Oryx 650L has in these types of weather conditions.
